bunion medical term
The medical term for a bunion is "hallux valgus" or "hallux abducto valgus" (HAV). The term "hallux" refers to the big toe and "valgus" refers to the misalignment of the toe, pointing away from the midline of the body. "Abducto" means moving away from the midline. So "hallux abducto valgus" refers to the big toe moving away from the midline and pointing towards the other toes.
Hallux valgus is a progressive condition that develops over time, it can be caused by a variety of factors such as genetics, foot structure, and the type of shoes worn. It is characterized by a bony bump on the inside of the foot at the base of the big toe, pain, inflammation and difficulty in walking.
